Girls show indecent pictures on internet

Jan 31 2005

POLICE plan to visit a Welsh school after two pupils put indecent photographs of themselves on the web.

One 13-year-old girl used a webcam to photograph herself in underwear and with handcuffs and a whip, then sent the picture to a website.

And a 14-year-old took photographs of herself naked and sent them to friends using an online messaging service.

Both girls are pupils at Cefn Hengoed Community School in Swansea.

Deputy headteacher Geoff Brookes urged parents to be more vigilant.

"The big issue is children having internet access in their bedrooms," he said..

"I think it is something parents need to consider very carefully because children feel their home is where they are most secure, they feel very secure in their bedrooms, and they are actually making themselves vulnerable by taking risks.

"The children understand the technology but do not under-stand the consequences. They haven't got the emotional maturity to understand what the consequences of their actions could be."

Mr Brookes said staff had been told about the incidents by other pupils.

The girls concerned had said they did it as a dare.

Liaison officers with South Wales Police are to visit the 730-pupil school to talk to year groups and assemblies, as well as offering to give advice to pupils' families..

"I think the most important element is educating parents," said Mr Brookes. "The police have said they would like to offer their services to any concerned parents who want to talk to them."

He stressed children's use of the internet was not a problem within school, where there are monitoring systems in place.
