Speeders fined £10.6m in Wales

Feb 14 2005

By Steve Bagnall, Daily Post

MID and South Wales are Britain's hotspots for speeding tickets it emerged yesterday.

Traffic police in the regions together dished out 121,353 tickets to drivers, generating nearly £7.3m revenue during the 12 months up to April last year.

North Wales came 11th out of 35 regions with 56,247 tickets given to motorists netting £3,374,820, giving an all-Wales total of well over £10m.

The lowest amount of tickets handed out was in Cambridgeshire with just 20,673 tickets handed out resulting in nearly £1.25m in fines.

Profits from the UK's speed cameras rose by £20m, more than a third on the previous year with almost 1.9m people caught speeding paying £113.5m in fines.

The figures were released under the Freedom of Information Act.

They show four drivers a minute are now being caught by roadside cameras.

The Department of Trade and Industry figures sparked new criticism from motoring organisations, which claim drivers are running a geographic speed ticket lottery.

They show a driver in mid and South Wales is six times more likely to be caught speeding than in Cambridgeshire.

Cities also appear to differ dramatically handing out tickets.

In London more than 108,000 motor-ists were caught by cameras generating £6.5m compared to Manchester which netted just £2.9m after 48,000 penalty notices were handed out.

Fresh accusations were also levelled against the government claiming ministers are waging a war against drivers.

Angry motorists claim speed cameras are more about generating cash from drivers than increasing road safety.

And with the prospect of more roadside cameras on the way as the government looks to relax placement regulations, the row is set to continue.

North Wales Police chief constable Richard Brunstrom has designated stopping speeders a top priority for his force.

Drivers caught are hit with a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence.

The AA has called for more consistency among forces.

A spokesman said: "Motorists need to know that they are facing the same rules and regulations across Britain.

"At the moment speed limits for almost identical stretches of road vary dramatically from area to area - this must change or it is unfair to the motorist."
