Two tickets in two hours doing 36mph

Mar 14 2005

By Steve Bagnall, Daily Post

A SPEEDING motorist yesterday slammed a "margin of error" crack-down by Arrive Alive chiefs.

Colin Gregory was slapped with speeding tickets twice in two hours on the A487 near Porthmadog doing 35mph and 36mph in November.

It proves North Wales is taking a much tougher stance with motorists, and have dropped the threshold to trig-ger a ticket.

Guidance from Acpo, the chief officers association, says speeding tickets should be handed out if a driver is 10% over the limit, plus 2mph.

Arrive Alive chiefs recently refused to confirm if they had lowered their error margin over a speed limit, and have consistently dismissed suggestions they are raising money through the safety scheme.

Mr Gregory from Richmond, North Yorkshire, has to pay a total of £120 in fines and will get six penalty points on his driving licence.

"This is the first time I have been to North Wales and count myself as a safe driver," he said..

"I was a visitor to the area, taking two days away from home to enjoy Snow-donia with my wife and son.

"Only several days after I returned home did I realise I had been caught on camera not once but twice in the space of two hours by mobile cameras on the A487 near Tremadog and Minffordd doing 35mph and 36mph respectively," said Mr Gregory.

"Sadly I cannot afford to make a 300-plus mile round trip to defend myself in court, so I will have to accept what is coming.

"What it has done is made me feel I have been targeted purely for financial reasons and not for road safety."

The 49 year-old Spar Shop manager believes police have got their road safety priorities all wrong.

"I have often thought while these mobile cameras are snapping the likes of me how many drunken drivers, illegal drivers, unroadworthy vehicles are they watching go by," he said..

Mr Gregory added it had put him off coming to North Wales.

Guidelines from the Association of Chief Police Officers, of which North Wales Police chief constable Richard Brunstrom is chairman of road policing, suggest motorists should not be prosecuted unless they are 10% - plus two mph - over the speed limit..

Arrive Alive spokeswoman Beth Mitcheson has said the guidelines allowed for a margin of error.

But she said motorists must not think they can break the speed limit and avoid prosecution.
