A NORTH Wales man whose Red Cap son was killed in Iraq last night unveiled plans to challenge prime minister Tony Blair at the forthcoming general election. Reg Keys yesterday urged the Tories and Liberal Democrats not to field candidates in Mr Blair's Sedgefield constituency, giving him a clear run. The former paramedic, from Llanuwchllyn, near Bala, also asked ex-MI5 officer David Shayler, who has announced his intention to stand in the County Durham constituency, to withdraw. Mr Keys' son, Lance Corporal Thomas Keys, 20, was one of six Red Caps killed by an Iraqi mob as they manned a small police station in Al Majar Al Kabir on June 24 2003. A Ministry of Defence inquiry into the soldiers' deaths found they could not have been prevented. But some of the families accused the MoD of a cover-up and called for an independent inquiry. The 52-year previously planned to contest defence minister Geoff Hoon's seat in Ashfield. But he has since decided to target Mr Blair's safe seat. Mr Keys' campaign is being backed financially by rock musician Brian Eno. Helping to manage the campaign is Plaid Cymru MP Adam Price who headed the campaign last year to impeach Mr Blair. Mr Keys said he wanted "justice" for his son. Mr Blair's majority is 17,000, but the grieving father said: "I think we can make a big dent in that and I think I can win. "When Tony Blair visited the victims of the Omagh bombing, he said if anything happened to one of (his) children he would go mad with grief. "How does he think those families of dead Iraqis feel? "How does he think I felt when I dressed my son for his funeral, combed his beautiful blond hair and tried to avert my vision from the side of his face that had been blown off? "I'm coming for you Mr Blair but I'm going to do it in a civilised way." A week ago the Conservative candidate in Sedgefield announced he was standing down. Danny Kruger was quoted in a newspaper as saying that the Tories were planning a "period of creative destruction" in the public services. * More than 200 people staged a peace rally in Aberystwyth at the weekend. erylcrump@dailypost.co.uk |
