ARCHAEOLOGISTS are carrying out a major survey of thousands of vulnerable pre-historic burial and ritual sites across Wales in a bid to preserve and protect them. Some of the monuments, including stone circles, standing stones and burial cairns, date back 6,500 years to neolithic times. The work, involving a string of archaeological trusts, has been backed with cash from Cadw, the organisation responsible for Welsh historic sites. It coincides with the publication by Cadw of a guide and information booklet, giving advice to landowners on the management and care of the sites. Matthew Ritchie, an assistant inspector of ancient monuments with Cadw, said: "As well as being significant features in the landscape, the sites contain valuable information for a wide range of studies." |
