Blunder makes nonsense of sign

Apr 7 2005

Daily Post

RED-FACED supermarket bosses yesterday blamed a printing blunder for making nonsense of a Welsh sign.

Shoppers in Bangor went for their dictionaries after visiting the meat section of Morrisons.

The English language notice advertising "Beef and Pork" had been translated into Welsh to read "Leig Pidion a Porc".

But it left Welsh speakers stumped. The sign should have read "Cig Eidion a Phorc".

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: "All of the Welsh language signs at the Bangor store are produced by a third-party company who sourced the translations from the Welsh Language Board.

"The discrepancies in this particular sign appear to have occurred during the printing process and we apologise for any offence caused.

"A new sign will be erected in this area as soon as possible and the incorrect sign removed."

The Welsh Language Board have been working with several companies, including Morrisons, when it comes to Welsh language signs.

They welcome information from the public so that discrepancies can be swiftly amended. Gwynedd Council chairman Charles Wyn Jones, who lives at nearby Llanrug, felt there was no need to blow the situation out of proportion.

"When similar mistakes have arisen in the past it is usually because the signs have been printed incorrectly."
