Ex-cops held over murder inquiry

Apr 14 2005

Daily Post

FIVE retired police officers were last night being quizzed as part of a reinvestigation of the original inquiry into the brutal murder of a prostitute 17 years ago.

Lynette White's mutilated body was found in a flat in the docks area of Cardiff on Valentine's Day, 1988.

Three men - Stephen Miller, Yusef Abdullahi and Tony Paris - were convicted of her murder and jailed for life in 1990.

But they were cleared on appeal and freed two years later.

In July 2003, security guard Jeffrey Gafoor admitted killing the 20-year-old, after being tracked down by police using new DNA technology.

Yesterday, South Wales Police said five retired officers - four men and a woman - were in custody and were being questioned in connection with offences of false imprisonment, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in public office.

A full inquiry into the original investigation was launched by then-chief constable Sir Anthony Burden in the week Gafoor admitted the crime.

And last November, the Independent Police Complaints Commission said it was to oversee the reinvestigation.

Assistant chief constable Stephen Cahill said last night: "When we embarked on this re-investigation it was a search for the truth.

"We promised Lynette's family and the victims who were wrongly arrested, charged and, in three cases, convicted of her murder, subsequently serving time in prison for an offence they did not commit, that we would establish what went wrong.

"I can reassure everyone that we remain steadfastly committed to seeing this search for the truth through to its ultimate conclusion," he added.
