Menu-nited

Apr 15 2005

By Hywel Trewyn, Daily Post

A CHIPPY in Bala had to shut-up shop yesterday after Manchester United's first-team squad dropped in for a slap-up meal.

The multi-million pound stars - who earn £50,000-a-week plus - couldn't wait to ditch their low-fat diets after working up an appetite white-water rafting.

Gary Neville had steak and kidney pie; Cristiano Ronaldo had chicken, while Wayne Rooney had a jumbo sausage and chips.

Stunned chippy boss Owain Williams said: "We've got two sizes of fish and they all chose Jumbo. They wanted plenty of plates of mushy peas and gravy on the tables.

"I wouldn't have liked to have been on the bus with them on the way home!"

The squad had tried to book into the town's Plas yn Dre restaurant which had just shut for the afternoon.

Owain, who runs the à la carte restaurant with his brother Siôn, 35, explained to the team that the chef had gone home.

He offered to try to re-open the restaurant earlier but said the Red Devils would have to wait.

The 32-year-old, who first thought it was a wind-up and the party were a group of cleaners from Old Trafford, informed the starving footballers that he also owned Y Badell Aur chippy in the town - and they jumped with glee..

While most of the 24-strong party plumped for fish, chips and mushy peas - others ordered chicken, steak and kidney pie and jugs of gravy as part of an order worth £200 - leaving a total tip of £30.

Owain said: "The girls don't usually see tips like that!"

Reading out a list of the players orders, he added: "They were all there, Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane, Roy Carroll, Gary Neville, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney, Wes Brown, Alan Smith, Liam Miller, David Bellion, Tim Howard..."

Only injured Welsh hero Ryan Giggs missed out after being left behind for the team-building trip ahead of Sunday's FA Cup semi-final showdown against Newcastle United at the Millennium Stadium.

The impromptu stop-over was arranged when the footballers became hungry after spending the day canoeing and rafting along the Tryweryn river at the National White-Water Centre, Frongoch.

A Manchester United spokes-woman last night explained that the first-team squad were officially on a "team-building away-day to North Wales".

The trip came after United skipper Roy Keane this week hit out at his team-mates, claiming some were failing to give 100% after the 2-0 defeat in the Barclays Premiership at Norwich last Saturday.

Owain said: "It all kicked off when I got the call and spoke to Gary Neville who seemed to be in charge. "He asked me if I could fax them a copy of the menu and I told him I couldn't because it's laminated and I offered to bring it up to them instead."

Owain jumped into his car and sped the three miles or so to Frongoch.

The players were handed the menu and quickly chose what they wanted.

Gary wrote up a list and Owain rounded up extra staff - a team of 11 turned up - to wait on the stars..

He said: "They were all great lads and very polite and well-behaved. I spoke to Gary, Rio and Cristiano. They said they had enjoyed themselves and had had a lovely day."

The team's coach pulled up out-side Y Badell Aur, Stryd Fawr, Y Bala at 4.30pm prompt and suddenly the streets were full of Manchester United fans.

Many locals were stunned when some of the world's finest players casually stepped off the team coach and headed into the chippy.

Owain added: "They were all casually dressed but it was obvious that they were not from Bala and they stuck out like a sore thumb!"

Although they were willing to sign everything put their way, the star-struck fans were warned: "No pictures."

But while around 50 locals peered into the café to watch their heroes feasting, unfazed Owain took his sons Kane, four, and Max, one-and-a-half, down to Llyn Tegid to feed the ducks!
