A PUBLIC service to commemorate the life of Plaid Cymru's first MP Gwynfor Evans takes place on Wednesday.

The centre of Aberystwyth is expected to come to a standstill during the service at Seion Chapel, Baker Street, at 1.30pm. Roads will be closed and TV screens set up outside for those unable to get in.

Tributes will be led by the party's "three Dafydds" - Wigley, Elis Thomas and Iwan.

Evans, one of Plaid Cymru's principal architects, died last Thursday aged 92.

His threat in 1980 to starve himself to death unless Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher set up a Welsh-language TV channel led to the creation of S4C.

Evans' son--in-law Ffred Ffransis said members of the public would be "warmly welcome" at the service..

"The family welcome all those who wish to join with us in giving thanks for Gwynfor's life," he said..

"Everyone can take part through their presence and prayers."

A private funeral will take place at his home, Talar Wen, Pencarreg, at 11am on Wednesday.

Later in the day, there will be a private family service at Aberystwyth Crematorium.

The family is urging people not to send flowers, but make a contribution to the charity Christian Aid.
