FIRST minister Rhodri Morgan and Plaid Cymru's Ieuan Wyn Jones last night led tributes in the Assembly to Gwynfor Evans.

The first Plaid Cymru MP died last week at the age of 92 following a long illness.

Mr Evans won a famous victory in the Carmarthen by-election in 1966.

In the early 1980s he threatened to go on hunger strike in the campaign for a Welsh-language television channel.

Mr Morgan told AMs: "He was one of the ultimate gentlemen of politics, always interested in other peoples' point of view..

"That is why it's a privilege for me, on behalf on the Labour Party and the government here, to pay a personal and political tribute to Gwynfor Evans, and also to pass our sincere condolences to his children and grandchildren in Carmarthen and other parts of Wales."

Mr Jones described Mr Evans as his "political hero", saying he was inspired to join Plaid Cymru after hearing one of his speeches in the 1960s. "He was a strong leader, a strong person and an utterly principled politician," he said..

* The funeral service will be broadcast live on S4C today at 1.20pm. The service takes place at Seion Congregational Church, Aberystwyth, where more than 1,000 people are expected to attend. Gwynfor Evans
