New plan to restore blaze-hit mansion

May 6 2005

Daily Post

FRESH plans are being drawn up for a historic North Wales mansion gutted in a blaze last year.

When Hafodunos Hall, in Llangernyw, was destroyed in an arson attack last October it was at the centre of a planning row.

Local residents were upset at plans to convert the Victorian hall into a luxury hotel and build 90 chalets in the grounds.

John Rochelle, managing director of Colwyn-based developers SFJ Ltd, which owns the property, described the chalets as an "enabling development" to fund the restoration of the hotel and gardens.

Two men were subsequently jailed for torching the hall which was designed 140 years ago by Charles Gilbert Scott.

In February Mr Rochelle withdrew his plans for the redevelopment.

Yesterday the developer said: "We're working on plans for the hall at the moment."

Mark Baker, the Prestatyn student who launched the campaign to save Abergele's Gwrych Castle, is writing a book on Hafodunos. It is expected to be published in August.
