Rhys supports brothers' cause

May 6 2005

By Maria Malatesta, Flintshire Chronicle

BAFTA winning Welsh actor Rhys Ifans has performed in a documentary film produced by two Mynydd Isa brothers.

David McKnight, 29 and his brother Mike, 20, of Mountain View, travelled to Ifans' London home yesterday to record their bilingual educational film on globalisation, which he will narrate.

The actor, who was brought up in Ruthin, and is a former Mold Ysgol Maes Garmon pupil, is famous for his roles in Notting Hill and cult film Twin Town and offered to contribute to the film for free.

The footage was shot recently in the Central American republic of Nicaragua and explores issues such as environ-mental degradation, workers rights and fair trade.

Their sister Lizzie, a 17-year-old Mold Alun School pupil, completes the family contribution to the film, by providing the voice-over for a young factory worker, called Aileen.

Ben Gillham, 17 and Caroline Dove, 25, both from Holywell, also provided voice-overs for the 20 minute work.

It's hoped the production will be completed in time for the Royal National Eisteddfodd in August of this year.

The project has been funded by the development education organisation CYFANFYD through a grant scheme from the UK Government's Department for International Development.

David said: 'We've all volunteered our time on this project and Rhys has kindly taken time out from his busy schedule to record the narration in English and Welsh.

'The film is aimed at young people and Rhys is well known to young people across Wales both as an award-winning actor and a supporter of progressive causes.'

Mike, who is also a vocalist with popular Flintshire band, The Trickster, said: 'We'll be recording each of the voice-overs and Rhys' narration over the next few weeks.

'We'll then be ready to edit and - hopefully - it'll be completed in time for the Eisteddfodd.' maria.malatesta@cheshirenews.co.uk
