One final lick gave terrier survival chance

May 23 2005

By David Powell, Daily Post

Amy Davies, six, enjoys a quiet moment with Dilwyn, the bull terrier who has captured her family's heart with his antics

A VET'S nurse saved a condemned English bull terrier's life after he tenderly licked her hand moments before he was due to be put to sleep.

The unwanted dog was about to be destroyed but the veterinary assistant decided bull terrier Dilwyn deserved another chance.

The nurse contacted the Bull Terrier Club Welfare Trust, a dog welfare organisation, which found him a temporary loving home with Kevin Davies, 32, and his wife Clare, 39, of Rhuddlan.

The large black brindle male English bull terrier may yet be returned to his owner if he or she comes forward.

Dilwyn had been found unwanted three weeks ago and was brought to Cater veterinary practice, Mostyn Avenue, Craig y Don, Llandudno, to be put down.

Mr Davies said: "They had him on the table ready to be injected and the needle was in the vet's hand. "But the dog was wagging his tail and started to lick the nurse's hand. She obviously felt he deserved another chance and saved him. They gave him another 24 hours."

Mr Davies said the team rang the Bull Terrier Club Welfare Trust near Southampton which contacted dog breeders Mr and Mrs Davies in Rhuddlan to take in the dog.

He said: "The welfare organisation didn't realise Dilwyn only had 24 hours to live and neither did we.

"They also had no idea how far it was from Craig y Don to Rhuddlan."

The next day, the Davieses called at the Craig y Don surgery to collect their new dog.

Kevin and Clare have two daughters Amy, six, and Charlotte, four, who took to Dilwyn immediately.

The couple breed bull terriers under the name T£ Tarw Bull Terriers.

But they don't have enough space to keep Dilwyn permanently because they have three dogs of their own, bull terriers Chester and Hattie and a collie called Dime.
