DOLPHINS, porpoises and whales are at risk from nautical joyriders in the holiday waters of west Wales, claims a pleasure boat owner, who has photo-graphed an injured young dolphin. Hundreds of the marine mammals live in the area but many are injured each year by boat propellers and jet-skis. Pleasure boat owner Alan Gray of Pwllheli said he has seen injured and scarred dolphins off the Llyn Peninsula. He said: "A number of our resident dolphins now bear the scars of frequent collisions. "It is particularly sad when a baby dolphin suffers pain and scars caused by the reckless, thoughtless and probably ignorant use of small boats. "I see a young dolphin regularly. In the photograph, however, which was taken recently on a cruise from Pwllheli, you can make out a series of small semi circles on his skin. These semi-circles are scars that have been caused by a propeller from a small boat." Cardigan Bay, along with the Moray Firth in Scotland, has more dolphins than anywhere else in the UK and is one of the last remaining areas around the UK where cetaceans (the collective name for whales, dolphins and porpoises) are relatively common. |
