Welsh activists attack shops

May 27 2005

Daily Post

LANGUAGE campaigners targeted shops in a Mid Wales town for not using enough Welsh.

On Wednesday night, Welshpool businesses including WH Smith, Woolworth, National Milk Bar, NatWest, Barclays and Iceland were plastered with stickers demanding Ble Mae'r Gymraeg? (Where's the Welsh?).

The action was part of the Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Society) campaign for a new Welsh Language Act. Shops in Flint, Caernarfon and Aberystwyth have been targeted previously.

A Cymdeithas member said: "Last night's direct action in Welshpool was a sign of our determination to see a new Welsh language act introduced which will have powers extending to the private sector."
