Campaign to protect Welsh is launched

Jun 2 2005

Daily Post

LANGUAGE activists yesterday launched a campaign for a new Welsh language act.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Society) members fear unless new legislation is introduced it will mean the language will lose ground.

The group claims it could be 10 years before legislators deal with the issue again.

A meeting at the Norwegian Church in Cardiff Bay heard campaigners call for more to be done to safeguard the language.

Sian Howys said: "This is a definitive moment in the campaign for a new Welsh language act. The Welsh Assembly is about to abolish the Welsh Language Board and establish a Dyfarnydd iaith (Welsh adjudicator).

"These changes need new legislation and we should take full advantage of the situation to demand a new act which will strengthen the status of the language in Wales."

Cymdeithas yr Iaith want a Welsh language commissioner to champion the language. The society will step up their campaign this weekend with a meeting on the steps of the Welsh Assembly building in Cardiff.
