Campaigners battle to save rare turtle dove

This picture represents a twelfth of Wales' entire turtle dove population. Conservationists are campaigning to boost the species' numbers

CONSERVATION campaigners last night launched an appeal to save turtle doves from extinction in Wales.

Experts warned the, once common, summer visitors could be wiped out. It is thought just six pairs remain in Wales.

The birds, immortalised in the carol The Twelve Days of Christmas, have been affected by intensive farming and forestry practices. The last few pairs are limited to Monmouthshire.

RSPB Cymru is now heading up a 16-month project to survey turtle doves and encourage suitable farm management practices.

Among the charity's partners is Forestry Commission Wales, which has already enjoyed conservation success with another endangered woodland bird, the black grouse.

RSPB Cymru farmland projects officer Debbie Scott said: "This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference for a species that has almost disappeared from our countryside."

* Report any sightings of turtle doves since 2000 to Debbie Scott on 01248 363800.
