IT'S been branded the most annoying craze to sweep Britain for some time. But despite sparking record complaints the Crazy Frog mobile phone ringtone is still number one in the charts. Now North Wales has picked up on the phenomenon - with what could be called its own Llyffant Lloerig. A Welsh-language version of the ringtone appeared on the internet last week and was quickly snapped up by Welsh mobile users. But the Welsh frog has a slightly filthier mouth than his English counterpart and speaks in a distinct Caernarfon accent. Last night the Welsh frog's creators were warned by the image's owners - leave our frog alone, or else. On Sunday Crazy Frog, the first ringtone to enter the charts, notched its second week at number one. It has sold more than 150,000 records. The pale grey amphibian started life in Sweden in 1997 thanks to a 17-year-old moped fan. Daniel Malmedahl, of Gothenburg, sat down in front of a computer with friends and recorded himself imitating the sound of a souped-up moped. A friend of Daniel, now a 24-year-old computer parts salesman, put the recording on his own website where it gained modest attention. It was not until 2003 that the phenomenon gathered pace when another Swede, Stockholm-based artist Erik Wernquist, drew a frog to accompany the sound. |
