Language warning at lake protest

Jun 11 2005

Daily Post

A WARNING Welsh-speaking communities could disappear forever will be made at a protest on the shores of Llyn Celyn near Bala today.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (Welsh Language Society) believes if present trends continue, no natural Welsh-speaking community will be left by the year 2020.

The rally will call on people to join Cymdeithas in its campaign to reverse the threat.

The rally is being held on the shores of the reservoir because it believes the drowning of Capel Celyn in the 1960s is the most poignant example of a Welsh-speaking community losing the right to control its own future.

Among the speakers will be Meirionnydd Nant Conwy MP Elfyn Llwyd.

The rally will call on people to support the call for a property act for Wales as a measure which offers solutions to the housing crisis undermining Welsh-speaking communities.
