Red kites help boost forest visitor numbers

Jun 20 2005

Daily Post

MID Wales tourist bosses last night said a rise in red kite numbers and the popularity of cycling paved the way for a new £750,000 forest visitor centre.

A bird feeding station and mountain bike trails helped Bwlch Nant yr Arian, near Aberystwyth, pull in the punters.

In the mid-1990s just 20,000 people visited the spot. But last year it attracted 65,000.

It is hoped the centre will help visitor numbers to soar to 120,000 over five years.

The new centre has a system for collecting rainwater which is re-used to flush toilets and to wash mountain bikes.

Recycled newspaper is being used as insulation and there is a wood fuel heating system.

Last year 12,000 mountain bikers used the three trails.
