The wind and waves should power Wales

Jun 21 2005

By Tom Bodden, Daily Post

Economic minister Andrew Davies wants to see wind farms such as this one off Prestatyn followed by another 800 megawatts of new wind and wave power schemes

WALES could harness the power of wind and waves to fuel its growing economy under plans unveiled yesterday.

Assembly economic minister Andrew Davies said he wanted the country to become a showcase for alternative energy using large-scale turbine and tidal projects.

His new route map for Welsh energy production set a target of 800MW of new wind production by 2010.

But Ruby Williams from the North Wales Save our Scenery campaign said Mr Davies' responsibility for both energy and tourism posed a conflict of interests.

"There are 35,000 jobs in North Wales sustained by tourism alone, what is this energy plan going to do to protect that?" she said..

"Evidence from our supporters in tourism suggests visitors don't come to North Wales to look at industrial sites, but for the natural beauty."

The group is opposing plans by npower for 230 turbines at Gwynt y Mor wind farm four-and-a-half miles off the North Wales coast.

The road map highlighted wind power, but also wave and tidal energy with demonstration projects planned by 2010. The prospect for clean coal and "carbon capture" technologies would also be discussed.

Announcing the plans at Port Talbot, Mr Davies said: "With a larger manufacturing sector than the UK average, and a strong heavy industry component, access to large quantities of affordable and reliable energy is especially important for our economy."

But Friends of the Earth Cymru said plans included three "large and waste-ful" gas-fired power stations at Milford Haven and Amlwch, Anglesey, and the Severn Barrage mentioned in the consultation would be less efficient than tidal lagoons
