Swimmers warned to avoid jellyfish swarms

Jun 24 2005

Daily Post

A bather may be thinking twice about going for a dip after seeing the swarm of stinging jellyfish off Black Rock Sands near Porthmadog

SWIMMERS were yesterday warned to steer clear of an armada of stinging jellyfish spotted off the North Wales coast.

The alert came after more than 1,000 moon jellyfish were washed ashore at Black Rock Sands, in Morfa Bychan.

Experts said the jellyfish were brought to North Wales by warm currents.

As thousands of tourists headed to the North Wales coast to enjoy sizzling temperatures, Gwynedd council yesterday warned people to steer clear of the sea creatures.

Maritime officer Barry Davies said: "We would advise people not to touch them, turn them over or play with them.

"They deliver a mild sting if touched. It is not too dangerous, but it could be worse for people who are allergic."

He added the seas around Tremadog Bay were safe to swim in.

He said: "People swimming should be OK, but obviously avoid any swarms that may be in the water."

Moon jellyfish (aurelia aurita), the UK's most common species, can arrive in massive numbers.
