Businessman died in solo sex game

Jul 6 2005

By Sara Thomas, Daily Post

A DAD-of-two died in a hotel room after a sex game went wrong.

An inquest heard Richard John Williams was clearly involved in auto-eroticism.

The 47-year-old, of Cromwell Close, Penyffordd, near Mold, was discovered by a cleaner in a room at the Holiday Inn, Northop Hall, two days before Christmas.

Police surgeon Dr Robin Der-went Williams said a halter chain was found around Mr Williams' neck but there was no sign of a struggle.

A Flint inquest was told yesterday he died of asphyxia as a result of a ligature and positional asphyxia.

But Home Office pathologist Dr Brian Rodgers said chronic heart disease was an underlying cause of death.

Married in 1981, Mr Williams had a degree in business studies and worked as a buyer for major companies in the South.

When the family moved to North Wales, he worked for a company in Bromborough and later for Sharps, in Llay, near Wrexham.

But in 1996, Mr WiIliams became ill with a heart complaint and underwent treatment at Wythenshawe Hospital, in Greater Manchester.

North east Wales coroner John Hughes said his condition made him extremely tired and "some-what depressed".

He also had osteoporosis of the spine.

In 2000, he was made redundant but found new work with TI Automotives, on Deeside Industrial Park, where he worked as a senior buyer.

On December 22, he said goodbye to his wife Jane, claiming he had an afternoon meeting with a director.

Mrs Williams also went to work, expecting him home that evening.

But work colleagues understood he was taking December 22 off to go Christmas shopping.

Police found his body at the Holiday Inn following reports from staff.

Mr Hughes said: "Mr Williams was found alone and dead. Clearly from the evidence, Mr Williams was involved in auto-eroticism in that room and it is not my job to go into detail."

The court heard Mr Williams' heart condition was once so severe he was on the transplant waiting list. But he responded well to treatment and was taken off the list.

Home Office pathologist Dr Rodgers said death was caused by asphyxia as a result of a ligature and positional asphyxia.

But he was at high risk of a heart attack, heart failure or the asphyxia could have sparked a ventricular arrhythmia (uneven heartbeat).

Mr Hughes recorded a verdict of accidental death.
