INTERNATIONAL harpist Catrin Finch and Plaid Cymru leader Ieuan Wyn Jones received Bangor university's highest honours yesterday. The two were given honorary fellow-ships, awarded to people who make distinguished contributions in their field. Twelve received the prestigious accolade during one of this week's ceremonies, which will see 1,800 students graduate. Llanon-born Catrin started to play the Celtic harp when she was six. The 25-year-old former Royal harpist holds the record for being the youngest person to perform at a Royal Albert Hall BBC proms concert. "It is a great honour," she said yesterday. "It is nice to think the university can give such an award for somebody as young as me." Catrin was the first Royal harpist in more than 100 years, and was appointed by the Prince of Wales. Last year she handed over the post to Jemima Phillips. Mr Jones, AM for Ynys Môn, was also delighted with the accolade. "I find it a great honour for me to be recognised by a university that has done so much for the community," he said. |
