STUNNING cloud formations in the night skies high over North Wales could be a sign of global warning, says a science writer. John Rowlands is building up a dossier on the spectacular but unexplained summer sailor's sky phenomenon, officially known as noctilucent clouds (NLCs). A senior technician at Bangor university's school of ocean sciences, John is capturing the "night shining" clouds on film and wants Daily Post readers to help him with more photographic evidence. Anglesey-based John said: "In all honesty no-one fully understands what is causing these eerie clouds, or what their appearance might mean for the future of the planet. "There are very few scientists working on NLCs, although Nasa will launch a satellite in September next year to start examining what is going on up there." John added: "If no NLCs were seen before the Industrial Revolution, then I think we should be worried about what they might be telling us about the health of our planet." He said North Wales sees the rare and beautiful clouds high in the earth's atmosphere. "Since the 1920s, NLCs have been appearing more often, and it is now thought that this, coupled to their appearance during the Industrial Revolution, is evidence of a relationship with global warming." |
