A YOUNG beachcomber found more than he bargained for while rock pooling with his mother on the North Wales coast at the weekend. Armed with just a tiny aquarium net, six-year-old Sam Kirkham claims to have landed four small flying fish. "We just couldn't believe it," said mother Sarah last night. "They were only small but they were flying out of the water trying to get out of the bucket. "I knew they were baby flying fish because we had seen some when we were on holiday in the Canary Islands," said the trainee midwife.. After desperate attempts to contact experts failed, the fish were eventually released back into the sea. Sarah, 28, of Malverly Drive, Chester, and Sam (left), a pupil at the city's Victoria Infants School, in Chester, were on a day trip to Colwyn Bay with her parents Margaret and Ian.
"Sam is mad about wildlife and loves nothing better than exploring rock pools on the beach or doing a bit of pond dipping. "We love North Wales and often visit Anglesey just for a day out." She added: "With mum and dad sitting on the prom, we went off to check out some rocks close to Colwyn Bay pier. The tide was going out and we noticed a current of water pouring back out to sea and Sam just put his small net in to see what he could find. "When he emptied it into the bucket, we both realised he had caught what we are convinced were some flying fish. "He has never found anything like it before and was really excited. "Whatever he finds, Sam always puts back into the sea. He noticed the other creatures in the bucket, including the odd crab, were trying to eat the fish. "But he managed to save the fish and put everything else back in the water." |
