Language protesters denounced as bullies

Aug 3 2005

Daily Post

THE language activists who tried to disrupt Rhodri Morgan's tour of the Eisteddfod Maes were last night branded "bullies".

Cymdeithas yr Iaith (Welsh Language Society) members followed the first minister as he visited festival stands.

Using a megaphone, they repeated their demands for a new Welsh Language Act.

They were angered when Mr Morgan refused an invitation to visit their stand to discuss their concerns over the future of the language.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith spokesman Huw Lewis said: "He has often said the Welsh Assembly is taking steps to ensure more use is made of the Welsh language but the Labour-led government is doing next to nothing about it.

"We want to see a new Welsh language act and a property act put in place to protect the language and our communities. We also want to see public bodies making more use of the language."

The protest was peaceful and police made no arrests.

A Welsh Assembly spokesman said last night: "The actions of Cymdeithas yr Iaith were entirely inappropriate. The first minister will not respond to a handful of bullies on a day when he is trying to meet people involved in important work such as those on the Mencap stand. "We feel we have a very strong record in promoting the Welsh language."
