WILDLIFE enthusiasts are being recruited to take part in one of the biggest ever operations to count whales and dolphins off the North Wales coast.

The exercise is being mounted by the Sea Watch Foundation with prime locations along the Anglesey coast set to play a vital role.

Foundation spokeswoman Clare Dickins said: "The watch has been held for the past four years but this could be the most important yet.

"We want as many members of the public to come out and join us on Saturday August 13, which is the official start of National Whales and Dolphin Watch week.

"Last year's impressive headcount included four northern bottlenose whales as well as up to 100 bottlenose dolphins and scores of common dolphins and porpoises. This year, with more eyes, we could top those figures."

She added: "It gives members of the public a chance to learn more about the 28 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises found in UK waters.

"Holidaymakers, walkers, sailors and bird-watchers are among those we are asking to send in details of any sightings. The more information we get the better. Their reports will help inform our research into topical issues, such as the effects of over-fishing and marine noise pollution."
