School of 1,500 dolphins seen off coast

Aug 15 2005

Daily Post

A MARINE expert told how he spotted the unusual sight of a school of some 1,500 dolphins off the west Wales coast.

Cliff Benson, chairman of Sea Trust, the marine arm of the Wildlife Trust of South and

West Wales, saw the common dolphins during a routine survey off the Pembrokeshire coast last week.

He estimated there were around 1,500 dolphins of all ages, but added: "It could be more than that. "It was pretty spectacular - the scene was amazing. We turned the engines off and all we could hear was splashing and leaping," said Mr Benson who works as a volunteer.

"The only disturbance was heads and tails flapping. It was a magical experience."

Mr Benson said the reason behind the dolphins' arrival was a mystery.

But he said the area would be a particularly good place to breed and there were many calves in the group.

He said the lack of predators, the water temperatures and the amount of food could attract the dolphins.
