Drunk bit PC who tried to help him

Aug 16 2005

Daily Post

A DRUNK out celebrating his divorce ended up biting a policeman who was trying to help him, a court heard yesterday.

John Paul Young was cutting down large branches and placing them in the middle of the road.

He was found urinating in the central reservation of a dual-carriageway and police stopped and offered to take him home.

But Young became aggressive and ended up biting PC Declan Gallon on the forearm during a struggle, Flintshire magistrates at Mold were told yesterday.

The officer punched Young because he feared the 33-year-old was about to bite a chunk out of his arm.

The PC subsequently underwent blood tests to check for infection.

Young of Merllyn Lane, Bagillt admitted assaulting the officer and being drunk and disorderly but escaped an immediate prison sentence.

As part of his 16 week prison sentence, suspended for one year, he was also ordered to stay indoors between 9pm and 5am for 12 weeks under an electronic tagging order.

He must do 80 hours unpaid work and pay £300 compensation to the officer.

Steven Alis, defending, said Young was a man of good character who had no convictions for violence.

It was his case that on three occasions when police went to get him out of the police car, he was grabbed by his thumb which he had previously broken.

It was not known if the officers had done that deliberately or accidentally but the defendant was in pain and reacted in the way described.

He did not normally drink but that night had been out celebrating because his divorce had come through.
