A NORTH Wales animal sanctuary is facing closure because there isn't enough money to run it. Freshfields animal rescue at Nasareth, between Caernarfon and Porthmadog, desperately needs help. If volunteers - and more importantly financial backing - are not found then charity founder Lesley Tarleton, 56, says she will call it a day. But she is adamant none of the 80 cats, 28 horses and ponies, two pot bel-lied pigs, two pet sheep, three dogs and several rabbits will be put down. Her two charity shops in Porthmadog and Caernarfon are raising only about half the £1,000 a week needed for feed and veterinary bills. "Unless a miracle happens we would have to move," said Lesley yesterday.. She set up Freshfields animal rescue near Formby in her native Merseyside 30 years ago, which still runs successfully. But three years ago Lesley's charity was left a smallholding near Nasareth by people who used to help her work on Merseyside and she moved to North Wales with eight horses. "Now we have 28 horses and mainly elderly ponies which have problems or cannot be ridden any more. We also have a cat rescue, the only one in the area. "One of the problems is when we take a cat in we usually have to pay to have it neutered. "But after three years we are not getting the level of support I had wished for. "I think we really are facing the possibility of selling up and moving. The animals will not be destroyed," said Lesley, who is aided by one full-time helper and two part-timers. |
