Tests on imported monkeys slammed

Sep 1 2005

Wrexham Mail, Llandudno

NORTH Wales animal rights campaigners came together in Wrexham on Friday to protest against the trade in monkeys from Mauritius to laboratories in the UK.

The protest was part of a national week of action and focussed on Thomas Cook, the largest seller of holidays to Mauritius.

Protesters with placards distributed leaflets to passers-by outside the Wrexham branch of Thomas Cook calling for a complete boycott of the Mauritian tourist industry and Thomas Cook, who protesters claim have refused to stop selling holidays to the island.

The animal rights groups say Mauritius is one of the world's largest exporters of primates to animal testing labs.

Protestor Cathy Jenkins says many large companies, including British Airways, have taken an ethical stance and have refused to carry any animals destined for laboratories.

She said: 'Many people today have been horrified to learn about what is happening in Mauritius and how a high street name like Thomas Cook can continue to be linked to the country and have promised to write letters of protest.'

A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook said: 'Thomas Cook would like to stress that it is does not support animal cruelty and that its business has no connections with animal experimentation.

'The company is being targeted because its stores and call centres - along with 7,000 other UK travel agents - sell holidays to Mauritius'
