Official quits in leak row

Sep 2 2005

By Eryl Crump, Daily Post

AN official at a Plaid-run council resigned last night amid allegations he offered confidential information to an anti-nationalist website.

Rhodri Tomos allegedly told the Nat Watch site he could pass on "embarrassing" details about plans to double moorings at Pwllheli marina.

The proposal was thrown out earlier this year after stormy Gwynedd council meetings, following concerns an influx of English-speaking boat owners would impact on the Welsh language.

Information and research officer Mr Tomos, 26, last night claimed it was "a prank that had gone wrong" and said he was devastated at losing his job.

Employed on a temporary contract until next spring, Mr Tomos said he resigned to prevent further embarrassment to himself and the council.

A Gwynedd council spokesman said: "We have no evidence to suggest that there is any basis to the insinuations made on this website. All key documents relating to the extension plans for Pwllheli Marina are available to the public."

In a series of emails to Nat Watch officials last month Mr Tomos offered the "inside stories, what really goes on" but the web-site replied it was not interested.

Mr Tomos wrote: "I have potentially plenty to pass on but I don't really like the manner you've been so untrusting towards me, so not sure why I should bother."

In response, Nat Watch said: "Don't then. We can easily survive without the support of a nat (nationalist) with a chip on his shoulder."

Mr Tomos said: "Nah, I've got the inside stories, what really goes on, you know naaathing (sic)."

Nat Watch responded: "Then you have two choices: You tell us, or you don't. I can't emphasise how much this isn't bothering us."

Mr Tomos then wrote: "OK I'll give you one for free. There's one thing lacking in your website - there's no mention of the Pwllheli Marina issue, probably the most embarrassing incident this year for Welsh nationalists."

Nat Watch published Mr Tomos's message on its main website yesterday, prompting Welsh Labour to call on Gwynedd Council to "come clean" on why proposals for the marina development were rejected.

Labour's spokesman, Martin Eaglestone, said: "If there is any suggestion that councillors rejected the development for the wrong reasons then it should publish all correspondence immediately. This is now an issue of trust."
