Our killer roads

Sep 15 2005

By Gareth Hughes, Daily Post

NORTH Wales' 11 deadliest roads have been identified and police plan to blitz them with speed traps.

The force has designated the roads "red routes" based on the number of casualties over the past three years.

Patrols will be stepped up and special campaigns launched to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries.

The killer roads are:

* The A5025 between Amlwch and Llanfachraeth

* The A499 Llanwnda-Pwllheli

* The A494 Bala-Dolgellau

* The A496 Llanelltyd-Dyffryn Ardudwy

* The A550 Dobshill-Abermorddu

* The B5381 St Asaph-Trefnant

* The A525 Trefnant-Denbigh

* The B5126 Northop-Connah's Quay

* The A547 Abergele-Old Colwyn

* The A547 Abergele-Rhuddlan

* The A547 Bodelwyddan-Halkyn.

In a report to tomorrow's North Wales Police Authority meeting, chief constable Richard Brunstrom says: "These routes have been subjected to scrutiny and action plans formulated to reduce the number of collisions."

A high-profile police presence is being planned plus more speed traps - both visible through Arrive Alive vehicles and officers using hand-held radar guns - and covert, using the helicopter. The number of breath tests will be stepped up and seat belt campaigns will be increased.

The three main causes of deaths have been excessive speed, excess alcohol and not wearing a seatbelt.

The police is continuing to run Operation Late Arrival, in conjunction with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), which has led to several East European drivers being arrested for speeding and driving excess hours. A total of 282 prohibition notices have been issued.

"This action against the foreign LGV driver with a total disregard for road safety and driver's hours legislation will not be eased as it is by prevention that we avoid a tragedy," says Mr Brunstrom.

Officers are still concerned about anti-social driving, such as noise disturbance, and in the eastern division alone 66 drivers have been warned. The force helicopter has been used to stop drivers using Deeside industrial estate for "cruising".

Checks on Expressway

TRAFFIC using the A55 Expressway across North Wales is to be subject to round-the-clock checks.

North Wales Police has received £200,000 from the Home Office to have automatic number plate recording (ANPR) systems at fixed points along the trunk road.

A mobile unit has been used to monitor traffic, and can identify vehicles without road tax and those which are stolen.

"The fixed sites will provide North Wales Police with the capability to monitor the A55, 24 hours a day, identifying stolen vehicles and identifying criminals from intelligence databases, and contributing to national security," said the chief constable.
