Groom's racist stag night slur

Sep 22 2005

By Glyn Bellis, Daily Post

A GROOM out on his stag night in a North Wales resort accused an Indian businessman of hiding a bomb in a suitcase, a court heard yesterday.

Just days after the London terror attacks, geologist Ajoya Borthakur was ordered to empty out his luggage in a hotel by two half-naked men.

The "drunk, rude and aggressive" pair then rifled through his belongings.

Deputy chief constable Clive Wolfendale later used the incident to highlight rising racist attacks in North Wales since the bombings.

Yesterday Gareth Lukey, 31, formerly of Clayton Court, Mold, who now lives in the US, was fined £250 and ordered to pay £55 costs. The senior environmental health officer admitted raciallyaggravated disorderly conduct on July 16, his stag night.

Victim Ajoya Borthakur, on a business trip to North Wales, took his suitcase to a Llandudno hotel lounge while he waited for a taxi to take him for his 6am flight to Delhi, said David Mainstone, prosecuting.

After collecting more luggage, he found his case missing.

Two men trying to open it quizzed him about his country of origin and said he might be carrying a bomb.

Mr Borthakur was distressed by his ordeal, added Mr Mainstone.

Nia Dawson, defending, said university-educated Lukey left his Halton council job this summer and married in America last month.

He had a wide circle of friends of all ages and race.

Mrs Dawson said: "He's not someone who holds racist views in any shape.

"He describes himself, perhaps because of his employment, as perhaps sometimes being over-zealous, over-assertive and maybe a little over-officious when dealing with members of the public.

"Perhaps in drink on this night his demeanour was seen to be different to how he meant to portray himself."

He noticed the suitcase in the reception.

"Irrationally he decided to go and find the owner of the suitcase. He says possibly the bombings were in his mind," Mrs Dawson remarked..

He asked Mr Borthakur to show he owned it. No racial comment was actually made by Lukey, insisted Mrs Dawson.

"He's sorry. He wants to write to Mr Borthakur offering his apologies."

Magistrates' chairwoman Ann Roberts told Lukey: "No matter what the circumstances this sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable at any time."

In July Mr Wolfendale shocked North Wales police authority with details of how the victim was "sur-rounded and brutalised by a gang of youngsters."

He alleged they urinated into his suitcase and the police chief declared:

"It's sick." But yesterday the prosecution made no mention of the police chief's allegations in court.

After the hearing Lukey said there was no incident involving urinating and the victim wasn't brutalised.

He said: "I'm sorry that I inadvertently made the gentleman feel alarmed.

"I wasn't too happy with the deputy chief constable's comments. But I'm not going to complain."

Last night a North Wales police spokeswoman said: "The man has been convicted on the evidence presented to the court."

Insults in kebab shop

A 31-year-old man shouted a racist insult at Turkish staff during a rumpus outside a Colwyn Bay kebab shop, magistrates heard.

Sion Thomas Jones, of Upper Promenade, Colwyn Bay, admitted a racially-aggravated public order offence and was granted a conditional discharge.

He was made to pay £55 costs. The court heard he was with another man who was extremely drunk. Jones called staff "Turkish b*****ds."

Court chairwoman Jean Bryson told him at Llandudno: "You commented you're ashamed of what you said - so you should be.."
