Farmers threaten to ban troops

Sep 29 2005

Daily Post

FARMERS were last night threatening to wreck vital army training manoeuvres by banning crack troops from their land in protest at the hunting ban.

Landowners across a large swathe of mid and west Wales were planning to refuse to let the army use their land for a military exercise next month.

The move goes against a long-standing agreement in Wales which has traditionally given the army free access to farmland during manoeuvres.

Farmers' leaders in Wales claim the military are gearing-up for a high-profile manoeuvre.

Farmers Union of Wales members are being advised to take action as a way of showing anger at the fox hunting ban.

FUW leaders will be meeting a senior army figure in Carmarthen on Monday when the planned protest will be discussed.

"We will also be pushing for the army to buy more Welsh meat in recognition for all our support," said the FUW's Peter Davies.
