Golden relics of Bronze Age past

Sep 29 2005

By Eryl Crump, Daily Post

BRONZE Age treasure hailed as "the find of a lifetime" goes on show in North Wales next month.

The National Museums & Galleries of Wales (NMGW) bought the Burton hoard with the help of Heritage Lottery cash.

The £85,000 find - buried for more than 3,000 years - was unearthed by metal detector enthusiasts in Rossett, near Wrexham, last January.

It was declared treasure trove at an inquest and the group shared the value of the find.

The gold treasure chest included a torc (a wire twisted bracelet), a composite pendant, beads and rings, three bronze tools and a prehistoric pot base.

They go on display at the Wrexham County Borough Museum as part of the Re-Creations: Visualizing our Past exhibition next month."

In January the collection goes on display at the National Museum & Gallery, Cardiff. And in summer 2007 it takes pride of place in a new Archaeology Gallery.

NMGW's Bronze & Iron Age Collections curator Adam Gwilt said: "The skill required to make these items of gold jewellery is stunning and I look forward to the opportunity to research, and then present them in Wrexham and Cardiff."

Director of the National Art Collections Fund David Barrie said: "Hidden for 3000 years, this exceptional find reveals the sophistication and beauty of Bronze Age workmanship. Nothing like it is known in Britain and we just had to support this important acquisition."

* Other Middle Bronze Age artefacts discovered in North Wales include the famous Gold Cape unearthed in Mold.

And in 2002 Wrexham pair Pete Williams and Mike Sheen found fragments of a 3,000-year-old gold bracelet, a bronze axe and a dagger.
