SHOPS are fundraising to support the struggling animal sanctuary Freshfields at Nasareth. High Street shops, led by the Spinnaker fish and chip cafe in Porthmadog, are selling 20p raffle tickets for a prize draw, which takes place tomorrow, to help the cash-strapped sanctuary survive the winter. Freshfields animal rescue needs a miracle to keep it going until it can relocate to a smaller site somewhere nearby by next summer. Its two charity shops in Porthmadog and Caernarfon are raising only about half the £1,000 a week needed for feed and veterinary bills. Freshfields' Porthmadog shop manager Trisha Sharpe said several town businesses had kindly donated raffle prizes, including a TV, radio cassette player, jewellery box and pet blanket. "But the most credit goes to Dawn Roberts at the Spinnaker. It's marvellous how she's done all this off her own back, going up and down the High Street and promoting our cause." As well as supporting the raffle, Trisha appealed for people to continue donating bric-a-brac, clothes and spare packaged pet food to the shop. "I've worked at the sanctuary, before I became manager when the shop opened in January, and everyone there works really hard. In our first weekend here, we took over £100, but now we need much more." Freshfields' founder Lesley Tarleton said: "We are still considering all options, but the most likely is to move somewhere smaller nearby with better grazing, by next summer. We need a miracle really." She said they most need sponsorship or fundraisers - possibly by providing a 'loan home' for a pony for the rest of its life, or by paying £3 a month - a volunteer for half a day a week to help the animals, or a handyman to do repairs. Anyone who can offer help, visit the Porthmadog or Caernarfon shop, or contact Lesley on 01286 880808. |
