Hospital's chapel will serve people of all faiths

Oct 3 2005

Daily Post

A NORTH Wales hospital will open a new multi-faith chapel today.

The former chapel at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor is now an x-ray room.

The new chapel includes a counselling room and an area where ritual washing can take place before religious ceremonies.

Chaplaincy manager the Rev Wynne Roberts said the chapel was used daily by Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jews and Hindus.

He said: "The worship area can be adapted at short notice to meet the requirements of all faiths."

He added the centre now held a Sunday service, Catholic mass, weekday services and daily Muslim prayers.

It is open day and night for both patients and visitors "to spend a few moments in silence or in prayer within a soothing environment of tranquillity and peace," said Mr Roberts.

The centre also serves hospital staff.

Mr Roberts, hospital chaplain, said: "People from all over the world are regular visitors to North Wales and sometimes become patients at the hospital.

"Recently a Sikh was treated here and the family were regular users of the centre's facilities for worship."

North west Wales NHS trust chairman Elfed Roberts will open the chapel.
