Top cop quits as boss of roads

Oct 4 2005

By Gareth Hughes, Daily Post

CONTROVERSIAL police chief Richard Brunstrom yesterday revealed why he quit as speed camera champion.

Richard Brunstrom

The North Wales Police boss said he was to step down as head of roads policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo).

And tipped to replace him was another Welshman with equally strong views on speed cameras.

Mr Brunstrom said he was stepping down "because it's time someone else had a go. It's always a mistake to stay beyond your sell-by date".

He consistently hit the headlines with his outspoken views over speeding motorists.

And he was lampooned for his support for speed cameras which led to six million UK motorists being caught last year.

The chief constable's determination earned North Wales a reputation for having the most strictly controlled roads in Britain.

Despite quitting his Acpo role he will work closely with the Department of Transport to reform rules to allow greater flexibility on where cameras can be sited.
