Four months for growing cannabis

Oct 5 2005

Daily Post

A NORTH Wales man was jailed for four months yesterday after a court heard he grew 63 cannabis plants in his home.

Mark Morgan, 38, of The High Street, Connah's Quay, admitted possessing and producing cannabis for his own use. The plants had a potential street value of £9,000.

Flintshire magistrates were told the plants were discovered during a police raid.

Morgan, through his lawyer, Phillip Marshall-Thomas, said he was giving up heroin with the use of methadone but that made him weak and thin.

He feared he would not be strong enough to go on a heroin detoxification course and found cannabis "gave him the munchies" so he could eat and retain his weight.

Morgan had lost three stone in weight and decided to grow the plants instead of buying cannabis on the street, magistrates heard.

Morgan protested when he was handcuffed and led away to the cells and told magistrates: "Thanks for nothing.

You have never helped me, ever."

Mr Marshall-Thomas said Morgan co-operated with the police and it was not a cannabis farm.

"This is a small room with cannabis plants growing for his own use."
