A SURGEON last night said saving a stricken angler's eye was all in a day's work. Acrefair angler Darren Williams needed major surgery after a freak fishing accident left a lead weight embedded in his face. Ysbyty Glan Clwyd maxillofacial surgeon Emma Woolley helped rebuild his eye socket. Last night she said it was "amazing" he did not lose his sight.. The drama unfolded as Darren, 34, fished for carp with his brother Paul and friends at Llyn y Gors lake, near Llandegfan, Anglesey, on Saturday. When his line snagged, he "flicked" his 12ft rod causing the line and weight to suddenly break free.
The pear-shaped weight shot out of the water and into his face at speeds of up to 100mph. The weight penetrated his left eye, smashing the socket before lodging in an air sinus. His eye was pushed to the side. The Flexsys factory worker, who will be off work for a month, said: "I was really lucky. A couple of millimeters over and I could have lost my eye." Darren spent Saturday night with part of the weight still hanging out of the corner of his eye, before Dr Woolley operated on the damaged eye socket on Sunday morning. |
