Fair trade plea for Welsh farmers

Oct 18 2005

Daily Post

MILK produced in Wales should cost more and carry fair trade logos, the Liberal Democrats said yesterday.

Mike German AM, Lib Dem leader in the National Assembly, said consumers would be prepared to pay more for milk if they knew it was local.

Fair Trade products, such as chocolate and coffee, were intended to give third world farmers a better deal for crops.

The party said Welsh dairy farmers needed similar help because they did not get a good deal from supermarkets.

Mr German said: "Consumers are being asked to pay more by the supermarkets but none of that is finding its way through to farmers."

The recent e-coli outbreak in South Wales strengthened demand for good quality, local food, he said.

"The case for safe food can't be better made than at this time," he said..

The party's countryside spokesman Mick Bates AM said: "All too often supermarkets and processing companies are creaming off excessive profits. Consumers and farmers need to be protected from unfair practices.

"Welsh milk is a strong, healthy product and a Fair Deal brand would give everyone a boost."
