Bigotry claim over the 'ogling English'

Oct 18 2005

By Daniel Davies, Daily Post

A COUNCILLOR was last night labelled a bigot after he said jobless English incomers were "hanging around" a Welsh town "ogling single mums".

Plaid Cymru councillor Alan Speake said people in Carmarthen were worried about an influx of unemployed English people.

Last night, Plaid came under pressure to censure the outspoken Carmarthen-shire councillor.

The retired Home Office official denied his comments were racist.

In an email to the council he wrote: "Whether you like it or not, many people locally are very concerned about people moving in from England - and not working - and hanging around town in pubs 'ogling' young single parent mothers - the latter, who in the main do a marvellous job looking after their 'kith and kin' - in comparison to the childs (sic) father who in many cases, seem to be a complete waste of space."

Mr Speake said he wrote the emails to request statistics on settlers claiming housing benefit, so the council could plan its services better.

He wrote: "Yes, there is a problem I believe with incomers although the majority of them work extremely hard up at Oriel Jones meat processing plant - mainly Poles and Portuguese etc - so I am reliably informed.

"They are very welcome and so are many others who come here from abroad who see an opportunity for themselves and their families, the latter group who in many cases will probably arrive a little later."
