Man escapes jail by the skin of his teeth

Oct 25 2005

Daily Post

A NORTH Wales man who thrust a plastic plant into his partner's face was yesterday told he was "very, very close" to going to jail.

Scaffolder William John Evans was instead placed under 18 months supervision and ordered to do 240 hours unpaid work.

The 34-year-old, of Knowles Road, Llandudno, was also ordered to pay £250 compensation and £55 prosecution costs after admitting assault causing actual bodily harm.

Magistrates in Llandudno heard Evans was opening "beer after beer" while watching football on TV at his partner Lesley Evans's home last month. He was shouting and swearing.

James Neary, prosecuting, said Evans was abusive to his partner, banged her head on a wall, grabbed her throat, slapped her and threw her across a room. He was described as "foaming at the mouth".

Miss Evans suffered a cut and swelling after being struck with the artificial plant.

In a statement she said: "I've no life at all because of being with William."

Peter Brown, defending, said: "He bitterly regrets his actions and wishes he could turn back the clock.

"He's never done anything like this before."

Court chairman Colin Jones told Evans :"The assault was fuelled by alcohol and on a vulnerable person.

"You have come very, very close to a custodial sentence."
