Demonstration over windfarm

Nov 1 2005

Daily Post

WINDFARM protesters will stage a roadside demonstration in mid Wales today as a major operation gets underway to transport giant turbines.

They will be erected on Mynydd Clogau in the Cambrian mountains near Welshpool as part of an £11m development by Renewable Energy Systems.

It won the go-ahead for the project after a public inquiry.

Electricity will be generated for more than 8,700 homes by the 66m-high turbines when the windfarm near Adfa is commissioned next spring

But opponents say it will be a blot on the landscape.

Mid Wales businessman Dan Munford, who is organising the demo, said there would be no attempt to stop the lorries.

"We're using the opportunity to highlight the fact that we have now collected 1,500 signatures on a petition demanding an all-Wales referendum on the issue of wind farms, " he said..

"We're tired of the Assembly Government telling us what to do and forgetting to ask."

A Renewable Energy Systems spokesman said: "We hope the delivery of the turbines during these periods will not cause too much disruption. We would appreciate it if motorists would ensure the highway is kept clear of parked cars during the delivery periods."
