Football club in language row

Nov 3 2005

Daily Post

A ROW broke out after football bosses refused to write letters in Welsh to a Caernarfon club.

Yesterday, Welsh language minister Alun Pugh criticised the Football Association of Wales for its English-only letter.

In the Assembly Plaid Cymru AM Alun Ffred Jones said the Caernarfon club was told the FAW would, "not be acknowledging Welsh or answering letters in Welsh".

Mr Pugh said: "All national governing bodies are encouraged to increase the use of the Welsh language. If people write a letter in Welsh they should get an answer in Welsh."

Conservative AM William Graham asked the minister to urge the Welsh Rugby Union to increase its use of the language on its website. But Mr Pugh said: "I think we are pushing at an open door there."
