Councils plan parking blitz

Nov 7 2005

Daily Post

THREE neighbouring county councils are to join forces in a major crackdown against motorists who flout parking regulations.

To compensate for the loss of traffic wardens Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy are to take on the role of the police by setting up teams of parking attendants.

They should be operating in just under 18 months time and the county councils are hoping the operation will pay for itself.

Anglesey's executive committee has already given the new "decriminalised parking enforcement scheme" the thumbs up.

Last night a council spokesman insisted it would be a partnership.

He said: "Legislation allows local highway authorities to assume the powers of the police in respect of enforcing parking regulations both on street and in council operated car parks. The system will be enforced by parking attendants who'll take over from traffic wardens who previously worked for North Wales Police.

"They will look out for motorists who ignore parking restrictions such as parking on double or single yellow lines; parking without a permit or in limited waiting areas; and parking in disabled bays without a disabled badge."

Dewi Rowlands, Anglesey's head of highways and transportation, explained: "We hope to see the scheme, which will be established in partnership with Gwynedd and Conwy, up and running by April 2007.

"All the money from fixed penalties will be used to fund it."
