Roadworks nearly done

Nov 24 2005

by Sarah Marion Jones, North Wales Weekly Newspapers series

COMPLETING major roadworks near Pwllheli seems a step closer this week, as a new section of the A497 has been opened to the public.

Traffic lights and workmen on the road from Llanystumdwy, past Afonwen to Abererch has caused months of headache to locals, but the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel.

The section from Afonwen to Hafan y M r is now complete, as Wil Roberts, Pwllheli town councillor and member of the A497 partnership, explained.

He said: "The road has opened much earlier than we had anticipated. We have been very lucky with the weather, apart from the rain in the last few weeks, which has allowed us to get on with the work.

"We also had some delay at the beginning of the year with a gas pipe.

"There is one section where the new road crosses the old road where traffic is still diverted.

"With a bit of luck it will be completed in the new year, ready for the tourist season. The target was June."

Landscaping work is yet to be finished.

"It is still a building site," added Mr Roberts. "This means the 30mph restrictions will still exist until all the work is completed, because of health and safety laws."
