Racist yob, 11, shouted abuse

Jan 11 2006

Daily Post

A YOB aged just 11 spat and shouted racist abuse at a Nigerian student in a North Wales seaside resort, a court heard yesterday.

The 34-year-old mum suffered a torrent of abuse over three months.

Police warned the youngster about his behaviour but he continued, Llandudno magistrates were told.

He was placed on a 10-month referral order and must pay £50 compensation with £20 costs after he admitted racially aggravated harassment and assault.

Court chairman John Davies said: "Both these charges are particularly nasty.

"Hopefully through the referral panel and what you have to do, you will never come to court again.

"You will get the opportunity to have rehabilitation to keep you out of court and out of mischief."

Nita Dowell, prosecuting, said the boy was never before in trouble with police. But the case was deemed too serious for him to be dealt with in a way which avoided court proceedings.

The victim was at her "wits' end " and was depressed because of his conduct.

"She came to the area to start a new life. She's finding it hard to settle," the prosecutor remarked.

Ms Dowell said the first trouble happened in September while the woman was in her front garden.

The assault happened in December.

Nia Dawson, defending, said the boy accepted his behaviour was wrong. She said the background was that last summer there had been an incident when the complainant allegedly pushed him. Later, as he walked past her house last September, the woman approached the boy in a "con-frontational" manner..

He felt frightened and was abusive.

Mrs Dawson added that on another occasion when it was alleged he insulted the woman, it was a pal who shouted the racist abuse.

The boy told the court: "I'm sorry." He said he had been angry.
